Phishing scams and how to spot them

Online scams are becoming increasingly common, and it’s important to know how to protect yourself. If you receive an email from Bookem requesting urgent action to ‘secure your account’ or avoid it being locked or suspended, it could be the result of a compromised email account being used to send fraudulent messages.

Here are some key details about how Bookem communicates with users so you can easily spot phishing attempts and stay safe.

What to expect from Bookem’s standard communication

Bookem uses the following methods to communicate with users:

  1. Overdue payments: If you have overdue payments, you will see a banner on your calendar within the app. We will not send overdue payment notifications via email, SMS, or any other external method.

  2. Suspended accounts due to non-payment: If your account is suspended for non-payment, this will also be displayed as a banner on your calendar. Again, there will be no external notifications.

  3. Low token balance and top-up reminders: You will see a banner on your calendar prompting you to top up your token balance if it is running low. No external reminders will be sent.

  4. 'What's new' broadcasts: Updates about new features or important announcements will always be shown in-app under the ‘What’s New’ section.

  5. App updates: When app updates are required, you will be prompted to update the app upon logging in to Bookem.

  6. Direct communications: Bookem may contact you directly through email, SMS, WhatsApp, or phone call. Official communications will always come from the following sources:

What Bookem will never do or ask for

  • Bookem will never ask for your banking details, card details, or any other sensitive information.

  • Bookem will NOT use the two-way messaging system within the app to send any of the above notifications.

Notifications such as overdue payments, account suspensions, and low token balances will always be displayed as banners on your calendar.

Tips to avoid phishing scams

  1. Verify sender details: Always check the email address or phone number against the official contact details listed above. If the communication comes from an unrecognised or suspicious address, do not respond or click on any links.

  2. Be cautious of urgent requests: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure you into acting quickly. Bookem will not pressure you to provide sensitive information or take immediate action.

  3. Do not share sensitive information: Bookem does not require sensitive personal or banking information for normal operations.

  4. Report suspicious activity: If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from Bookem, report it immediately to help@bookem.com.

By staying informed and cautious, you can help protect yourself and others from phishing scams. If you have any concerns or need further clarification, reach out to us using the official contact methods listed above.
